Be a Jerk! student involvement

Hui Malama students learned to decode the messages hidden under the glamor of  alcoholic product advertisements, and how to evaluate complex media messages, thanks to Rachelle Bachran and an NIH media literacy curriculum entitled “Media Smart Youth.” They developed their own responses as part of the “Be a Jerk” campaign during Maui County’s Alcohol Awareness month in April. The “Be a Jerk” campaign encourages adults NOT to purchase alcohol for underage students (see earlier post for more background info). Hui Malama students created bookmarks with their own messages, shown in the PDF below. Some of these bookmarks will be kept and displayed throughout the year at community events.
