Community Values

These are the values we strive to live by every day:

[accordions][accordion title=”Capacity to Learn and Contribute”]

We believe that all youth have the capacity to learn and do, with the critical components being the participant’s willingness to engage fully, effective methodology, stimulating environment, and varied outcome measurements.

By tapping into multiple intelligences, participants are capable of acquiring and putting to work skills, knowledge and experience. Youth improve through frequent application in real life work and community settings.

We recognize, embrace, and support differences, individual talents, and each person’s function in the community.

We understand how a productive and healthy community is dependent on the contributions of many different types of skills, intelligences, gifts, and contributions.

This value promotes individual self-esteem, confidence, and self-awareness, with a connection to school, place and community.

A firm foundation in who one is and where one comes from, as well as honoring and investing in our place, builds resistance to negative peer influence and social pressure.

We act in ways that are positive and promote our community’s shared values, and expect the same type of respect from others. We recognize the complexities and accept the flaws in one’s self and others. Through non-violent communication, we are willing and able to address conflict and disagreements, and can problem-solve to reach mutually beneficial solutions.

We appreciate and value the individual benefits and rewards gained by an interest and investment in something larger than one’s self.

There is an appreciation for all that has come before us and we accept responsibility to prepare and provide for future generations.

We utilize and build upon Maui’s rich cultural history and diversity to ensure that responsible stewardship of natural and cultural resources provides the foundation for all programs and activities.

We will continually practice skills that are compatible with Maui’s cultural choices and economic aspirations, giving value to our community’s distinctive social, economic, and environmental characteristics.

Through exposing youth to job opportunities and introducing them to potential employers, we will set participants on a path toward self-sufficiency and finding rewarding jobs that are both good for our economy and our environment.
